Valeda® Light Therapy for Dry Age-Related Macular Degeneration

A New Approach to Treating Dry AMD

For many years, patients diagnosed with dry age-related macular degeneration (AMD) had limited treatment options beyond monitoring, nutritional recommendations, and lifestyle changes.

The Valeda® Light Delivery System introduces a new approach.

Valeda is an FDA-authorized, non-invasive treatment designed to improve visual acuity in certain patients with dry AMD. Using a technology called photobiomodulation (PBM), Valeda delivers specific wavelengths of light to the retina to stimulate cellular activity and support retinal function.

What Is Dry Macular Degeneration?

Age-related macular degeneration affects the macula, the central portion of the retina responsible for the detailed vision you use to read, drive, recognize faces, and perform everyday activities.

Dry AMD can cause gradual deterioration of retinal cells and may lead to:
Blurry or distorted central vision

• Difficulty reading small print

• Reduced contrast

• Difficulty seeing details

• Needing brighter lighting

• Trouble recognizing faces

• A gradual decline in central vision

Because AMD can progress over time, regular retinal examinations and monitoring are extremely important.

How Does Valeda Work?

Valeda uses photobiomodulation, a form of low-level light therapy that delivers specific wavelengths of light to retinal tissue.

Unlike surgical lasers, Valeda uses low-intensity, non-thermal light.

The treatment is designed to influence cellular mechanisms involved in dry AMD and support mitochondrial function—the process cells use to produce energy.

By targeting retinal cells at the cellular level, Valeda provides a completely different approach to managing dry AMD.

What Happens During a Valeda Treatment?

Valeda treatments are performed right in our office and are:

Non-invasive: No injections or surgery.

Quick: Individual treatment sessions take only a few minutes.

Comfortable: Patients simply look into the device while specific wavelengths of light are delivered to the eye.

No recovery time: Patients can typically resume their normal activities following treatment.

Valeda treatment is provided as a series of sessions. Your eye doctor will determine the appropriate treatment and monitoring schedule based on your individual retinal health.

What Are the Benefits of Valeda?

For appropriately selected patients with dry AMD, Valeda offers an exciting new option for managing the disease.

Treatment is designed to improve visual acuity in qualifying patients.

Clinical data reviewed by the FDA found that after approximately two years, patients receiving Valeda treatment had an average improvement of approximately one line of visual acuity on an eye chart compared with patients who did not receive treatment.
